Arriving in Aylmer

July 4, 2024 - September 20, 2024

What happens to cultural practices of immigrant groups after being part of a community for multiple generations? Guest curator and Cultural Groups Coordinator at the German-Canadian Club of Aylmer, Ontario Rebecca Horeth will showcase findings from her thesis research so visitors may explore the stories, histories, and traditions of the Transylvanian Saxons through the lens of folklore. This community immigrated to Canada and to the Aylmer area beginning in the 1920s. Their traditions have been passed down and adapted over generations to remember their former homeland and to create a new home here in Aylmer and Malahide. Arriving in Aylmer: Transylvanian Saxons in Canada Since the 1920s will be exhibited at 75 Talbot St. E. from July to mid-September to commemorate eighty years since the evacuation of Northern Transylvania.
